A recent study published by the American Institute for Cancer Research states that in the U.S. 100,500 cancers each year are caused by obesity. Obesity is on the rise in North America, and this means that cancer rates will continue to climb. But how is obesity related to cancer, and what can we do to reduce our risk?
Why does excess weight increase the risk for cancer?
Research shows that being obese raises the risk for certain types of cancer including cancer of the uterus, esophagus, pancreas, kidney, breast (post-menopausal) and colon. So far, the studies have not shown exactly why the incidence of cancer is higher in obese people. But researchers believe that the following could explain the reasons for the higher risks for cancer:
- Excess body fat increases the body’s level of sex hormones. It is believed that these hormones are linked to cancer growth.
- Abdominal fat increases levels of substances circulating in the blood that stimulate cell division. The risk for cancer increases as more cells divide.
- Excess body fat lowers immune function and adds stress to the body, which might lead to cell damage.
What can you do to lower risk?
- Become more active. Studies have shown that increasing physical activity helps to lower insulin levels. Higher insulin levels (which are linked to increased risk) are seen in people with excess fat and lack of physical activity.
- Aim for a healthy waist size. Abdominal fat raises the overall level of inflammation in the body, leading to increased risk. Women should have a waist size of no more than 34 inches, and men should have a waist size of less than 40 inches.
- Add more fruits and vegetables to your diet. Fruits and vegetables offer many protective nutrients, and they can help you to feel full so that you eat less high fat foods.
- Limit red meat. Avoid processed meat.
Recent research proves that leading a healthy lifestyle will significantly reduce our chances of cancer. The choices we make each day can either increase or decrease our risks for cancer. Try to remember that the next time that you are walking by the high calorie dessert section of the grocery store, and head for the fruit section instead. Your body will thank you for it!
